So You Would Like An Animal Portrait

The majority of my work consists of animal portraits, including family pets, working dogs and horses, show and sporting animals. I tend to work mainly in pastel (pigment blended with chalk and china clay) and pastel pencil because I find that this medium lends itself particularly well to the portrayal of fur or feather.

I work from photographs since the detail required for a good portrait would make sittings impractical. I prefer to take the photographs myself mainly because it gives me the opportunity to meet the animal and gain an impression of its personality and character. Over the years, experience has taught me the kind of detail and composition required in a photograph to make a good portrait.

For clients living in Devon and Cornwall I can either call and take photographs at your home or, in the case of smaller animals such as dogs, you can bring them to my studio. I prefer to use natural light and for this reason photo sessions will be dependent upon suitable weather conditions.

In the event that you live further away or that your pet is no longer with you, I may be able to work from existing photographs, depending on their quality. If you have to send precious photographs by post it is wise to use registered post, put them in a plastic bag and include a piece of firm card for protection.

If a portrait is intended as a gift, but you think that the recipient would like to be involved in the planning of the picture, you might like to consider one of my gift vouchers.

If your portrait is intended as a surprise present for a family member do not forget to let me know so that I can avoid 'letting the cat out of the bag' should I have cause to contact your household.

Sizes given refer to the visible area of the portrait; the framed and mounted picture will be larger (see Framing).

The dimensions are approximate and will depend on the subject and composition of the painting. I am able to give quotes for larger or differently proportioned portraits.

Photography Price Guide

I am often invited to take photographs at sporting events with a view to painting portraits of the people and their animals, something which has proved very popular. However interest is also growing in the photographs that I have taken, so in response to a number of requests I have opened a photo gallery. Just contact me with the venue and date of your event and I will give you the code to view your album.
